Coffee Production in Uganda


Our aim is to increase coffee production through the generation of clean planting materials, promotion of the re-planting program, and yield improvements to existing old coffee trees, as well as to enhance the use of Good Agricultural Practices, able to support the management of diseases and pest, and use of agro-inputs.

There were two types of coffee which can be seen in Uganda, one of if it is Robusta, and the other type is Arabica, which has a ratio of 4:1. The Table shows coffee acreage, number of trees, and number of coffee households by region. During the year 2014, the are 295 million total tree stock covering an acreage of 353,907ha. Uganda is in the process of carrying out a coffee farmers’ registration that will ascertain the actual acreage under coffee and the tree density.

Uganda now may be one of Africa’s largest known coffee exporter, with its ambitious plan to have the best production and quality. Uganda in 2020 is officially known as the largest African producer and as well the sixth-largest global producer of coffee beans, producing both the Robusta and Arabica variety. The Robusta coffee beans make up about 80 percent of the coffee that is produced in Uganda that flourishes in the country’s central plateau, where the altitudes could range from 1000 to 1500 metres above sea level, with also Arabica that is grown mainly in a highland area such as east, west, and south-east.

Uganda strengthened its position as Africa’s largest coffee exporter with a record volume of 5.06 million bags in the financial year that ended on June 30 of 2020, Export earnings also reached an all-time high of US$494 million. In Financial Year 2018/19, Uganda exported 4.18 million bags worth US $416 million.
